Convic have been engaged to do the draft design process by Feb. I understand that this weekend the tender (for construction of the youth facility) will open and be advised in the paper and I guess on www.tams.act.gov.au Jed, I met earlier in the day with some other Gov / Youth / Council people as the Sk8 Association person and couldn't make the arvo meeting due to work commitments. Great that lots of skaters showed up. I think what people need to realise is that this is creation of a youth facility, not just a skatepark. In the meeting I attended there wasn't really much specific discussion around types of skateable obstacles, moreso just overall concepts including ideas around interactive / display / audience / stage type ideas for events. Eddison Park is a memorial park where the Woden Community Festival is also held. These attributes are also part of the process. As I understand what happens now is: - Those who attended the meeting and left their emails will get circulated the details and can comment / have input - Convic design team are coming up with a concept plan that will then be given out for comment - Seperately, through the tender process, a design/construct team will be engaged and then that will progress I will continue to do my very best to keep people informed and as always people are welcome to email me: luke@skateboard.com.au and if I don't know what is happening I will try to find out Thanks

There were two proposed sites, but this looks as though it is the preferred location being close to carpark and amenities and more easily accessible.

Turnout for the meeting was awesome. Stoked on the amount of skaters that were there. I was worried we would be outnumbered for a while.

MEDIA RELEASE: GREEN LIGHT FOR $2 MILLION INFRASTRUCTURE GRANT Published: February 24, 2009, 5:24 pm Section: Jon Stanhope, MLA | Media Releases Chief Minister Jon Stanhope has welcomed news the Rudd Labor Government has signed off on a $2 million boost for community infrastructure projects in Canberra to support local jobs. The funding, from the Rudd Labor Government's $800 million Community Infrastructure Program, will deliver a $1.4 million youth facility for Woden's Eddison Park and $600,000 in upgrades to Glebe Park in Civic. Mr Stanhope said the government was consulting the community on what they want from the youth facility, which could include a skate plaza, play equipment and a performance area. "Over 50 Canberrans attended an on-site consultation session last month to put forward their ideas on the new youth facility in Woden's Eddison Park - Canberra's most central district park," Mr Stanhope said."This feedback will inform the draft design for the works, which will be available for public comment at a second on-site consultation session this Saturday. "Students can have their say on the draft design at a lunchtime workshop at Canberra College this Friday. Canberrans who cannot attend the consultation sessions can give their feedback to the government online. "We are also engaging with representatives from key community groups including the Canberra Skateboarding Association, Woden Youth Centre, Backbone BMX, Woden Valley Community Council, Shifty's Skate shop, Youth Coalition and the Australian Federal Police through a special reference group. "I encourage everyone living in the Woden Valley and surrounding areas to put forward their ideas on this exciting youth facility. "I commend the Rudd Government for its investment in these important community infrastructure projects and creating local jobs during uncertain economic times," Mr Stanhope said. The on-site consultation session will be held from 9.30-11.30am this Saturday. Feedback can be provided online athttp://eddisonyouth.blogspot.com/2009/02/what-you-had-to-say.html Tenders close today for a project manager to oversee the Eddison Park and Glebe Park upgrades.Work on both projects is expected to start mid this year. Ok kids, strap yourself in. Here's the first draft of the concept plan. Get your butt down to Eddison Park tomorrow to have your say. Me personally, I'll be stoked if we even get faintly close to this. It's excellent. ![]()
